Resume Keywords
Resume keywords are the specific skills, tools, qualifications, and role-related terms that appear in a job description and that an ATS scans for. Including the right keywords — truthfully and in context — raises your match score and your chances of being shortlisted.
How to use resume keywords well
Keywords work best when they prove a skill rather than just list it. Instead of stuffing “Python, SQL, Tableau” into a strip, weave each into a bullet that shows a result: “automated reporting in Python, cutting prep time 80%.” This satisfies the ATS (the term is present) and the recruiter (the term is backed by evidence). Place your most important keywords in the summary and skills section too, since those are weighted heavily.
Match keywords to each job
Because every job description differs, the right keywords change per application. Run your resume against the specific JD with a free ATS score check to see exactly which keywords you’re missing, then add the ones you truthfully have.
Examples
- For a data analyst: SQL, Python, Power BI, A/B testing, data visualization.
- For a project manager: Agile, stakeholder management, risk management, JIRA.
